Current State of 1985 America
In 1985, America was experiencing a period of economic growth and prosperity, but also of political turmoil. The country was recovering from the recession of the early 1980s, and inflation had fallen to its lowest level in over a decade. The unemployment rate had also fallen, and the stock market was reaching new highs. But it was still recovering from the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal of the 1970s, and tensions between the US and the Soviet Union were high. The crack cocaine and overall drug epidemic was ravaging inner-city communities. Despite all these challenges, however, Americans remained optimistic about the future and were determined to make the most of their opportunities.
Ronald Reagan was serving as the President of the United States. His conservative policies had helped to spur economic growth, but had also been controversial due to their impact on social welfare programs.
Pop culture was dominated by music icons such as Madonna, Prince, and Michael Jackson. The movie industry was also thriving, with popular films such as Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, and Rambo: First Blood Part II.
New technology was rapidly changing the way Americans lived and worked. Personal computers were becoming more common, and the first mobile phones were being introduced. The internet was still in its infancy, but was beginning to be used by researchers and academics.
Despite the economic growth, crime rates remained high in many cities. Drug use and trafficking were major issues, particularly in urban areas. The crack cocaine epidemic was especially devastating, leading to increased violence and addiction. Police forces were struggling to keep up with rising crime rates, and many Americans were becoming increasingly concerned about their safety and security.
